"Groups" is more of a discussion area where people connect over a common thread or purpose. The regular LinkedIn is more like a "person to person" direct connection while the group is more like a "person to people" community.
Also, within a LinkedIn Group you can directly connect with others based upon both of you being in the same group. So, essentially it makes networking and building new connections easier and quicker."
